If you are a fan of Paulo Coelho's writings, you wouldn't miss his most appreciated work "The Spy". The spy is based on the last letter of Mata Hari, who was claimed as a spy during first world war which was between Germany and France.
Margaretha Geertruida(1876-1917), a girl of Irish origin, from Netherlands. She was the eldest among the four children of Adam Zelle and his first wife Antje van der Meulen. Adam Zelle was a business man, he sold caps and had invest in oil companies. When Margaretha turned 13 their fortune turned the plate, the Zelle family lost their investment leading Mr. Zelle and his wife to Separate. Soon after, Antje van passed away. Adam Zelle moved on and married another woman leaving Margaretha and her Three other siblings alone. They seeked shelter at their godfather's Mr. Visser, who helped her to get a job as a kintergarden teacher, later she was kicked out of the school because their were slanders that she was having affair with the headmaster.
Margaretha Moved to her uncle's place and found an Advertisement on a newspaper that Dutch Colonial Army Captain Rudolf MacLeod, who was living in what was then the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was looking for a wife.
Margaretha answered the advertisement and the couple gets married. Margaretha moves to along with her husband to Dutch East indies. Her family Life wasn't pleasing, her husband was a alcoholic, womanizer and abused her. She spent her free time studying local Javanese dance form and practiced it.
She rebounded with her husband thinking that he might have changed but she was disappointed and moved to Paris.
She lived as a horse rider in a circus and did part time modeling. However her faith turned her as a striptease dancer and she was hired to work in a museum. Her form of dance was seducive thus leading many officials falling for her. She was famous dancer back then and her career and demand went down gradually. By the time she made her remark as a courtesan and maintained her influence with high profiled dignities in the society.
World war-I, Netherland declared themselves as a neutral Nation. Mata hari had a good relationship with germany. She took her way to motherland via Spain and Britain so that she could avoid the battlefield. Her movement and choice of path made France suspicious about her. By the time Matha Hari was in love with a 23 year old pilot, Captain Vadim Maslov, whom she called the love of her life. Maslov was one among the strong army of 50,000 people.
However, Maslov was injured during the war and lost his vision, Mata hari was desperate to see her love of life but was abstrained by officials. They demanded for spying on Germany inorder to see her love. And they offered a good sum of money to her. She agreed. Mata hari had good relationship with the Crown Prince Wilhelm, eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II.
France thought that, Crown prince Wilhelm was the incharge of military in German but it was Kaiser Wilhelm II who took care of military affairs.
It was said that Mata Hari did Spy work for both the Nations taking advantage of the situation.
She was caught once by France officials and was stated for questioning where she declared herself as a spy for France and she was set free. Although, one of the German transmission message was tracked by France where they fell suspicious about a spy with a code name H-21 which clearly mentions the figure of Mata hari with this informations Mata hari was arrested by france. It's also said that Germany knew about Mata Hari's dealings with France and did the transmission purposefully.
She was arrested from her hotel room and nothing suspicious was found from her rather than a ink. Which she stated that as an essential because she used it for her dance makeup.
She was set for trail.

However, she admitted that she took money from Germany for Spying but never gave them proper piece of information. She also claimed that she has her soul to her motherland. The trail wasn't in her favor.
She was gun shot by 21 soldiers. While they were shooting she pass them a flying kiss, her facial expression doesn't changed at all. They ensured her death by shooting in her forehead.
There are still people who believe she was innocent and was scapegoat by France.
